Committee of 100 Convenes China Policy Debate between Obama and Romney Campaigns

On October 24, the Committee of 100 in partnership with the China Studies Program at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) convened China Policy Debate: Democratic & Republican Presidential Race 2012. This was the only China policy-focused debate endorsed by both presidential campaigns.

As the United States approaches a historic presidential election next month, the topic of U.S.-China relations increasingly pervades every facet of the national and local political debate. This month’s newsletter captures the Committee’s commitment to raising the level of debate in the Washington, DC policy community.

For the past 18 months, one of my strategic priorities has been to broaden the Committee’s impact in Washington, DC. Over the past two quarters, the Committee has made significant headway in engaging DC policymakers through the Washington Leadership Dialogue. A nine-member-strong C-100 delegation held a series of high-level meetings in June with key decision makers in Congress and at the White House and State Department. I am proud to spotlight the Committee’s decision to release the Statement of Principles of Guidance for Political Candidates on China-Related Issues during these meetings. The Statement calls on political candidates at all levels—national, state, and local—to refrain from using anti-China rhetoric and racial stereotypes in their political campaigns.

September celebrated three remarkable years in my role as C-100 Executive Director. As I review the past three years, I can say without reservation that each year’s accomplishments surpass those of the previous year. I attribute these impressive milestones to the stewardship of the Chairman and the Board of Directors in advancing C-100’s mission, to the members’ substantive contributions and to our professional staff, whose focused commitment and esprit de corps keep the organization strategically impactful.

This month’s newsletter charts the robust growth path of the Committee’s three core programs—Educational Exchange, Public Diplomacy, and Leadership Development—and upgraded operational capabilities. 

C-100 Members on the Lecture Circuit - Cheng Li, “China’s New Leadership,” Woodrow Wilson Center

Cheng Li, Brookings Institution Director of Research and Senior Fellow at the John L. Thornton China Center, joined former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger on October 3 at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C., for a panel on “China’s New Leadership: Opportunity for the United States.” C-100 Advisory Council member J. Stapleton Roy was among the other panelists.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Thanks Southern California Members

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa met with Southern California members on August 7 to discuss the development of ties between Los Angeles and China since the February visit of Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping.  C-100 Southern California Vice Chair Stewart Kwoh commented:  “The Mayor has provided strong leadership to expand tourism, investments and trade with China.  The Mayor credited C-100 with helping make his visits to China a success, including a trip late last year during which he met with Vice President Xi, who later visited Los Angeles in February 2012.”  Committee Chair Dominic Ng played a prominent role in hosting Vice President Xi during his stay in Los Angeles.

Two Hundred Attend Kickoff to Third Los Angeles Leadership Mentoring Program

Committee of 100 Chairman Dominic Ng welcomed over 200 young and mid-career professionals to the Third Leadership and Mentoring Program Kickoff Panel Discussion and Mentee Graduation on July 28 in Los Angeles. Ng encouraged the participants to become “fully participating citizens in American society,” taking part in community activities as well as excelling in their careers.
