Committee Governor Shirley Young recruited the dragon that danced for the New York Philharmonic’s Chinese New Year celebration on January 24, reported the Wall Street Journal in “The Right Dragon for the New Year.” Young, along with Guoqing Chen, Anla Cheng, and Oscar Tang, were among the co-chairs of the Philharmonic’s “Year of the Dragon” gala benefit, which attracted many Chinese Americans new to the orchestra’s offerings.
The benefit, held at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center, included a concert conducted by Long Yu and featuring pianist Lang Lang, oboist Liang Wang, and the Quintessenso Mongolian Children's Choir. A special touch was the display of the Chinese in America exhibit that was created by the Committee of 100 for the 2010 Shanghai Expo.
