On September 11, as the families of the victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks filed into the memorial at Ground Zero for the first time and soon after Presidents Obama and Bush gave their tributes, Committee of 100 Governor Yo-Yo Ma played Sarabande from Bach's First Suite for Cello Solo. Ma also performed for the first anniversary memorial of 9/11 in 2002.
On December 4, Ma will be one of five 34th Annual Kennedy Center honorees, along with Barbara Cook, Neil Diamond, Sonny Rollins and Meryl Streep. The honorees will be seated with President and Mrs. Obama at the Honors Gala, which will be broadcast on December 27 on CBS. Ma is described as “one of the most versatile and popular classical music performers in the world and his Silk Road Project has inspired students across the world to love and honor music.” Memorable images from Ma’s life are displayed in this photographic gallery from the Washington Post.
