Looking Back: Twenty Years of Committee of 100 Annual Conferences

The Committee of 100 is grateful for the speakers, honorees, and participants who have graced us with their presence over the last 20 years.

 

Highlights, 1990-2010:

 

1990: First Annual Conference: New York, NY

• Executive Director of the San Francisco YMCA Alan Wong gave a talk on “Chinese Americans- Past, Present, and Future” and Richard Holbrooke spoke on “Sino-American Relations in the Age of Gorbachev”

 

1991: Second Annual Conference: San Francisco, CA

• Morning session focused on China and America with a speech by Chinese Ambassador Zhu Qizhen. U.S. Ambassador James R. Lilley spoke on the current U.S. foreign policy in China. Other speakers included Cellist Yo-Yo Ma, former Delaware Lieutenant Governor S.B. Woo, Author Bette Bao Lord, and Justice Harry W. Low.

 

1992: Third Annual Conference: Washington, DC

• Morning session dealt with U.S.-China relations. Speakers included Chinese Ambassador Zhu Qizhen, Senator Frank Murkowski, Representatives Stephen J. Solarz and Robert Matsui. Afternoon session devoted to Asian American concerns for civil rights, social issues, economic opportunities, political involvement, cultural issues, and education. Eight prominent advocacy and social organizations with interests in Chinese American affairs participated in the forum.

 

1993: Fourth Annual Conference: New York, NY

• First session focused on “The Media and Chinese Americans.” Chinese Ambassador Li Daoyu addressed the Conference on the Chinese Economy and U.S.-China relations. Second session dealt with U.S.  foreign policy towards China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan in the Clinton Administration, as well as implications of the emergence of a “Greater Chinese Economic Zone.”

 

1995: Fifth Annual Conference: Pasadena, CA

• Speakers at the Conference included U.S. Ambassador to China J. Stapleton Roy, Senators Paul Simon and Bill Bradley, and Chinese Ambassador Dian Jiadong. Forum topics ranged from American policy towards China to Asian perspectives on human rights to the challenges that young Chinese Americans will face in the 21^st century.

 

1996: Sixth Annual Conference: Washington, DC

• Conference participants included Senators Daniel Akaka, John Kerry, and Sam Nunn, U.S. Ambassador James Sasser, Representatives Doris Matsui, Patsy Mink, and Chinese Ambassador Li Daoyu. Highlight of the Conference revolved around the Committee’s background paper, “Seeking Common Ground While Respecting Differences: A Win-Win Strategy for U.S.-China Relations,” which was distributed to congressional, government, business, and academic leaders.

 

1998: Seventh Annual Conference: Santa Clara, CA

• Speakers at the Conference included Chinese Ambassador Li Zhaoxing, Chang-Lin Tien, Chairman of Intel Andy Grove, and the Honorable Norm Mineta. Topics discussed were “U.S.-China Relations: Constructive Partner or Strategic Competitor” and “Asian Americans: Where Do We Go From Here?”

 

1999: Eighth Annual Conference: New York, NY

• Featured Speakers included Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson, Chairman & CEO Bell Atlantic Ivan Seidenberg, President of the World Bank James D. Wolfensohn, Senator Bill Bradley, Chinese Ambassador Li Zhaoxing, and Chairman of the Christian Broadcasting Network Pat Robertson.

 

2000: Ninth Annual Conference: Los Angeles, CA

• Conference participants included a reunion of the actors from The Joy Luck Club, Bill Moyers, Screenplay writer of Mulan and Toy Story 2 Rita Hsiao, and Film producer Chris Lee. Topics ranged from Asian Pacific American participation in executive management to ethnic profiling to Asian Americans in film and television.

 

2001: Tenth Annual Conference: Washington, DC

• First day focused on the U.S.-China outlook and relationship between China and Taiwan. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao gave the keynote address. Second day focused on the theme “Taking Charge: The Obligation of Public and Private Leadership.” Entrepreneurs, government officials, and nonprofit leaders discussed what Asian Americans could do for the greater good.

 

2002: Eleventh Annual Conference: San Jose, CA

• The theme “Contribute to America” showcased a variety of Chinese Americans who are leaders in their field and contributed significantly to American society. Recognized were key discoverer of Prozac David Wong, first Asian American woman in venture capital Helen Leong, legal reform leader Julie Su, and New York Port Authority Police Officer David Lim.

 

2003: Twelfth Annual Conference: New York, NY

• Chinese Ambassador to the United Nations Wang Yingfan gave the keynote address. Conference speakers included Author Gavin Menzies, CEO of Philips Electronics N.A. Rob Westerhof, and New York Times Correspondent Elisabeth Rosenthal. Topics ranged from Ambassadors perspectives on U.S., China, and North Korea to “AIDS in China: A Potential Pandemic?” to “Admiral Zheng He: The Man Who Discovered America?”

 

2004: Thirteenth Annual Conference: Los Angeles, CA

• The theme “At the Forefront of American Progress” honored Chinese Americans who had risen to those heights and inspired many others to emulate them. Honorees included Cyrus Tang, Gary Locke, Jerry Yang, and David Ho. Chinese Ambassador Yang Jiechi gave the keynote address. Panels explored such issues as the interplay between politics and economics in the Sino-American relationship, the impact of Asian Americans on the 2004 Presidential elections, progress in promoting education about Asia and Asian Americans in our public schools, Asian American philanthropy, and how to increase the presence of Asian Americans in the boardrooms of Fortune 500 corporations.

 

2005: Fourteenth Annual Conference: Washington, DC

• Senator John McCain and Treasury Secretary John Snow gave keynote speeches. President and CEO of Zogby International, John Zogby, presented the new C-100 survey “American Attitudes Toward China.” Conference participants also included Representative James Leach, Chairman of the House Subcommittee on East Asia and the Pacific.

 

2006: Fifteen Annual Conference: San Francisco, CA

• Noted speakers included Senator Dianne Feinstein, Washington lobbyist Thomas Hale Boggs Jr., former U.S. Trade Rep. Charlene Barshefsky, one of China’s foremost “America” experts Wang Jisi, and New York Times columnist and author Thomas Friedman.

 

2007: Sixteenth Annual Conference: New York, NY

• Entitled “Bridge to Change,” the Conference examined China’s transformation in a changing world. Conference speakers included U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, major financial leaders Henry Kravis and William Rhodes, and entrepreneurs like Shi Zhengrong of Suntech Power.

 

2008: Seventeenth Annual Conference: Los Angeles, CA

• Speakers at the Conference included Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill, Co-Founder of YouTube Steve Chen, Chairman & CEO of Mattel, Inc. Robert Eckert, the Supreme Impresario Quincy Jones, Olympic Medal Figure Skater Michelle Kwan, and Film Director Ang Lee.

 

2009: Eighteenth Annual Conference: Washington, DC

• Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke delivered the keynote address. Honorees included Henry Kissinger and Chairman & CEO of PepsiCo. Indra K. Nooyi. Speakers included Senior Director for Asian Affairs at the NSC Jeffrey Bader, Assistant to the President and Cabinet Secretary Chris Lu, and Economist Justin Yifu Lin.

 

2010: Nineteenth Annual Conference: San Francisco, CA

• Honorees included Former Vice Chairman of the National People’s Congress Cheng Siwei, Chairman of the National Policy Foundation Lien Chan, Principal Dancer of the San Francisco Ballet Yuan Yuan Tan, and Nobel Laureates Chen Ning Yang, The Honorable Steven Chu, and Daniel C. Tsui.
