Theodore Wang is the only Goldman Sachs partner in the U.S. who is from China. One of the partners in charge of Goldman’s global equity business, Wang joined Goldman in 1996, became a managing director in 2002, and partner in 2006. As such, he is one of the most powerful Chinese Americans on Wall Street. Wang says that he leverages his position at Goldman to help China grow, by advising Chinese regulators and sovereign wealth funds on how to structure and regulate financial markets and how to avoid the pitfalls of global investing.
Wang came to the U.S. in 1987 as one of the Chinese students admitted to graduate studies in physics through the China-U.S. Physics Examination and Application system. He earned a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Minnesota, followed by an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin. Combining these fields, in 1995, Wang co-founded Xeotron Corp., a successful company in Houston that produces DNA biochips used in the genomics industry and was sold to Invitrogen in 2004.
Education is one of Wang’s social causes. He has endowed two scholarships at the University of Minnesota and the University of Texas for students who will be the first generation in their families to attend college. Among his community activities, Wang is a trustee of China Institute and of the Museum of Chinese in America, both in New York City. For China Institute, Wang supports a program that helps economically disadvantaged New York City public school students to study in China. He is especially interested in MOCA’s community outreach programs in Chinatown and lower Manhattan.
Wang believes that the Committee of 100 “is in an excellent position to bridge the gap between China and the United States. What’s happening in China is historic, and the media owes it to the American public to inform them on what’s going on there.” As a result, he would like to see C-100 send more journalists and other opinion-makers to China.
