We wish you a peaceful and prosperous Year of the Hare!
In this issue of Committee Bridges, the theme is engagement—with the new U.S. Congress, Chinese leaders in Beijing, and culminating in the successful state visit of President Hu Jintao to the United States. Chinese Americans, including many Committee members, played an important role in greeting and engaging with President Hu.
A week before the state visit, the Committee invited Congressional members and staff to a briefing on U.S.-China relations. The interest was so great that we could not accommodate all those who wanted to attend, and we were encouraged to share the unique expertise of our members through further briefings of this kind.
Last December, the Committee sent a delegation of nearly 40 members to Beijing for high-level meetings with the Chinese leadership. Among those we met is the man who is the likely next premier of China, Vice Premier Li Keqiang.
Finally, we invite you to attend our 20th anniversary conference on May 12 in New York City. In this issue, we profile two of our honorees, former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, who initiated the Strategic and Economic Dialogue with China in 2006, and Hong Kong SAR Executive Council member Laura Cha, a leader in educational philanthropy as well as corporate governance.
